Habitat:
It is associated with sandy soils on creosote-scrub flats or washes bordered with small trees. It avoids rocky soils.

Range:
North American deserts from northern Baja California and northcentral Mexico northward to southeastern California and extreme southern Nevada and Utah, and eastward through southern Arizona to extreme southwestern New Mexico. This geographic range excludes the range of taxa now separated as C. eremicus.

Conservation:
There are no conservation measures in place; it is not known if the species is present in any protected areas.
