Habitat:
It occurs in a variety of vegetation types, but all are associated with fine-textured, sandy soils. Vegetation includes semi-arid grasslands, mixed-grasslands, and scrublands.Individuals store food in simple borrows, but not in large quantity (White 2009).

Range:
Ranges from southern Alberta and Saskatchewan (Canada) in the north to southern Hidalgo, Mexico in the south. Eastward from central Oregon and eastern California to central Kansas and Oklahoma (United States).

Conservation:
Very abundant in protected areas in the United States and probably in Mexico.
