The Order Scandentia consists of small, tree-dwelling mammals commonly known as treeshrews, found mainly in Southeast Asia. Treeshrews have slender bodies, long tails, and sharp claws, which make them excellent climbers. They are omnivorous, feeding on insects, fruits, and small vertebrates, and are known for their high intelligence and complex behaviors compared to other small mammals. Although once thought to be closely related to insectivores, molecular studies now place them near primates, making them an important group for understanding mammalian evolution. Scandentia species are mostly diurnal and play key roles in forest ecosystems as seed dispersers and insect population regulators.
