Family Dugongidae |
Family Trichechidae |
The Order Sirenia consists of large, fully aquatic, herbivorous mammals including manatees and dugongs. These slow-moving animals inhabit warm coastal waters, rivers, and estuaries, feeding primarily on aquatic plants. Sirenians have paddle-like forelimbs, a horizontally flattened tail for propulsion, and dense bones that help them remain submerged. They are gentle, social, and slow-breeding, making them vulnerable to habitat loss, boat collisions, and human disturbances. Often called “sea cows,” Sirenians play an important role in maintaining healthy aquatic vegetation and ecosystems.
