Family Sphenodontidae
Tuatara

Order Rhynchocephalia includes the tuataras, rare, lizard-like reptiles found only in New Zealand. They have a primitive skull structure, a slow metabolism, and a third “parietal” eye on top of the head. Tuataras are mostly nocturnal, feed on insects, small animals, and eggs, and have a long lifespan. This order is considered a living fossil, representing an ancient lineage that diverged from other reptiles over 200 million years ago.
