The Family Amphisbaenidae consists of limbless, burrowing reptiles commonly known as worm lizards. They have elongated, cylindrical bodies covered with rings of scales that give them a segmented, earthworm-like appearance. Adapted for a fossorial lifestyle, they possess strong, shovel-shaped or spade-like skulls for digging, and most species have reduced or vestigial eyes since vision is less important underground. Amphisbaenids are carnivorous, feeding mainly on insects, small invertebrates, and occasionally vertebrates. Distributed across parts of Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas, they play a role in soil ecosystems by aerating soil and controlling invertebrate populations.
