The Family Bipedidae consists of a small group of burrowing, limbless or nearly limbless lizards commonly known as Mexican worm lizards or bipeds. They are found in northwestern Mexico and are adapted for a subterranean lifestyle, with elongated bodies, reduced eyes, and strong forelimbs used for digging. Unlike most amphisbaenians, members of Bipedidae retain front limbs, which help them excavate soil, while their hind limbs are absent. These lizards are carnivorous, feeding mainly on insects and small invertebrates, and play an important role in soil aeration and controlling invertebrate populations in their habitats.
