The Family Loxocemidae is a small group of snakes represented by a single species, the Mexican burrowing python (Loxocemus bicolor). These snakes are non-venomous, stout-bodied, and fossorial, spending much of their life underground in tropical forests and scrublands of Mexico and Central America. They have smooth scales, a pointed snout adapted for digging, and feed primarily on small mammals, lizards, and eggs. Loxocemids are secretive and rarely seen, making them of particular interest to herpetologists studying burrowing snake ecology and evolution, as they show primitive traits linking them to other basal snake lineages.
