Habitat:
Varanus gouldii flavirufus occupies the sandy deserts of Australia, while V. g. gouldii occurs throughout the rest of the range. The species forages widely in open dry habitats and seeks shelter in deep sloping burrows, hollow logs, or dense litter (Cogger 2000, Wilson and Swan 2013).  Animals can occur in patches of suitable habitat in urban areas, such as cemeteries. It can live for up to 18 years in captivity.

Range:
This species is distributed widely across most of Australia, excluding areas subject to high rainfall such as the south coast of Western Australia and New South Wales, and a portion of Queensland (Cogger 2000, Wilson and Swan 2013). It ranges from 0-520 m asl.

Conservation:
No conservation actions are in place for Varanus gouldii, however, its range overlaps with a variety of protected areas including over 44 in Queensland alone (Macdonald 2011). The species is listed on CITES Appendix II.
