The family Dermochelyidae, within the order Testudines (turtles), consists of a single extant species commonly known as the leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). Leatherbacks are the largest of all living turtles, characterized by a unique leathery carapace instead of the hard shells typical of other sea turtles. They are highly adapted for a pelagic, oceanic lifestyle, capable of long-distance migrations across tropical and temperate waters. Leatherbacks primarily feed on jellyfish and other soft-bodied marine organisms, playing an important role in regulating jellyfish populations. Despite their wide distribution, they are critically endangered due to threats such as bycatch, marine pollution, and habitat loss.
