The family Rhynochetidae, belonging to the order Leptosomiformes, consists of a single extant species commonly known as the kagu. This rare, ground-dwelling bird is endemic to the dense forests of New Caledonia in the South Pacific. Kagus are notable for their striking bluish-grey plumage, long legs, and a prominent crest, as well as their unique, low, mournful calls. They are primarily insectivorous and forage on the forest floor for insects, worms, and small invertebrates. With limited flight ability and a very restricted range, the kagu is considered endangered, making it a symbol of conservation efforts in its native habitat.
