The family Peroryctidae is a group of marsupial mammals commonly known as New Guinean bandicoots. They are native to the island of New Guinea and nearby islands, inhabiting forested and sometimes grassland environments. Members of this family are small to medium-sized, omnivorous marsupials, feeding on insects, small vertebrates, and plant material. Like other bandicoots, they possess a short gestation period and give birth to relatively undeveloped young that continue development in a marsupial pouch. Peroryctidae are primarily nocturnal and are adapted for digging and foraging in soil and leaf litter. Their ecological role includes soil aeration and seed dispersal, and they are considered important components of New Guinea’s unique mammalian fauna.
