The family Megalonychidae, belonging to the order Pilosa, consists of the two-toed sloths. These slow-moving, arboreal mammals are native to Central and South America and are adapted to a life spent largely in the forest canopy. Megalonychids have long, curved claws for gripping branches, a low metabolic rate, and a specialized diet primarily of leaves, which they digest slowly with a multi-chambered stomach. Despite their sluggish movement, they are well-camouflaged and have few natural predators. They play an important role in their ecosystems by contributing to forest health through leaf consumption and seed dispersal.
