The class Pezizomycetes is a group of fungi within the phylum Ascomycota, characterized primarily by their production of ascocarps (fruiting bodies) that are often cup-shaped, known as apothecia. These fungi are mostly saprobic, feeding on decaying organic matter, although some form symbiotic relationships with plants. They reproduce sexually through the formation of asci, which contain ascospores, and some species also reproduce asexually. Pezizomycetes are ecologically important as decomposers and nutrient recyclers in soil ecosystems. Common examples include cup fungi like Peziza and truffles, which are valued both ecologically and economically.
