The order Phyllachorales is a group of fungi primarily known as plant pathogens, often forming dark, tar-like spots on leaves and stems. They belong to the class Sordariomycetes within the Ascomycota and are mostly obligate parasites, meaning they depend on living host tissue for growth. Members of this order typically produce perithecia, which are flask-shaped fruiting bodies, embedded in the host tissue, and release ascospores for reproduction. Phyllachorales fungi commonly infect a wide range of plants, including economically important crops, and their infections can reduce photosynthetic capacity and overall plant health. Morphologically, they are characterized by a close association with host tissue, dark stromatic structures, and simple, often septate ascospores.
