Family Basidiobolaceae |
|
The Order Basidiobolales is a small group of fungi within the phylum Entomophthoromycota (formerly sometimes placed in Zygomycota). Members are primarily saprophytic, living on decaying organic matter in soil or dung, though some can be opportunistic pathogens in humans and animals. They produce coenocytic (non-septate) hyphae and reproduce asexually via conidia, while sexual reproduction is rare or not well-documented. Basidiobolales play a role in decomposition and nutrient cycling, and a few species, such as Basidiobolus ranarum, are medically significant, occasionally causing subcutaneous infections in tropical and subtropical regions.
