The Family Rhinophrynidae is a small group of burrowing frogs represented by a single living species, the Mexican burrowing toad (Rhinophrynus dorsalis). These frogs are adapted for a fossorial (underground) lifestyle, with a stout, rounded body, short limbs, and specialized digging structures on their hind feet. They primarily feed on ants and termites, using a sticky tongue to capture prey. Rhinophrynids are found in Central America and southern Mexico, emerging from the soil mainly during rainy seasons for breeding in temporary pools. Their unique morphology and specialized habits make them an important example of adaptation to a subterranean niche among amphibians.
