The Order Schizomida is a group of small, nocturnal arachnids closely related to whip scorpions. Commonly called short-tailed whip scorpions, they have a segmented body with a short, whip-like tail (flagellum) and lack venomous stingers. Schizomids are usually found in tropical and subtropical regions, living in leaf litter, under logs, or in caves, where they hunt small invertebrates. They have pedipalps adapted for grasping prey and rely on sensory hairs to navigate in darkness. Though rarely seen by humans, they play an important role in the ecosystem as predators of insects and other small arthropods.
