The family Vombatidae consists of marsupial mammals commonly known as wombats, native to Australia. These stout, burrowing herbivores are characterized by their muscular build, short legs, and strong claws, which make them excellent diggers. Wombats have a distinctive backward-facing pouch to prevent soil from entering while digging. They primarily feed on grasses, roots, and bark, and are mostly nocturnal or crepuscular. Vombatidae includes three extant species: the common wombat and the southern and northern hairy-nosed wombats, each adapted to different habitats ranging from forests to arid regions. Wombats play an important ecological role by aerating soil through their extensive burrowing activity.
