| Family Squatinidae |
|
The Order Squatiniformes consists of angel sharks, a group of flattened, bottom-dwelling sharks found in temperate and tropical marine waters. They have a distinctive body shape with broad pectoral fins, a flattened head, and eyes on top, allowing them to lie camouflaged on the sea floor. Squatiniformes are ambush predators, feeding mainly on fish and invertebrates by quickly striking from their concealed position. Unlike many other sharks, they have relatively sedentary habits and rely on their camouflage for both hunting and protection. These sharks are slow-growing and reproduce via ovoviviparity, making them vulnerable to overfishing and habitat degradation.
