The Family Hylobatidae includes the gibbons, small apes native to the forests of Southeast Asia. Gibbons are arboreal and highly adapted for brachiation, swinging through trees using their long arms and hook-like hands. They are monogamous and often live in small family groups, defending territories with loud, elaborate calls. Gibbons have no tail, a lightweight body, and a flexible shoulder joint that aids in agile movement. As primarily frugivorous primates, they play an important role in seed dispersal, contributing to forest ecology.
