The Family Myocastoridae consists of large, semi-aquatic rodents, with the nutria (Myocastor coypus) as the only living representative. Native to South America, nutria have been introduced to North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa, often becoming invasive. They are herbivorous, feeding on aquatic plants, roots, and crops, and have strong, webbed hind feet adapted for swimming. Nutria are known for burrowing into riverbanks and wetlands, which can cause significant environmental damage, including erosion and habitat loss. They are mostly nocturnal, social, and highly adaptable, thriving in a wide range of freshwater habitats.
