The family Phaeosphaeriaceae is a group of fungi within the order Pleosporales (class Dothideomycetes, phylum Ascomycota) that primarily consists of saprobic and plant-pathogenic species. Members of this family are commonly found on dead or decaying plant material, though several species are important pathogens of crops such as cereals, grasses, and other plants, causing leaf spots, blights, and other diseases. They are characterized by producing darkly pigmented, septate spores (conidia) within pseudothecia or other fruiting bodies. Phaeosphaeriaceae species play a significant role in both ecosystem nutrient cycling and agriculture, as they can impact crop yield while also contributing to decomposition processes in natural environments.
