The family Botryobasidiaceae, in the order Cantharellales, comprises a group of fungi commonly known as corticioid or crust fungi. These fungi are mostly saprotrophic, growing on decaying wood, leaf litter, or soil, and they play an important role in the decomposition of organic matter in forest ecosystems. They are typically characterized by thin, spreading, often resupinate (crust-like) fruiting bodies with smooth to slightly textured surfaces, and they produce basidiospores on their fertile surfaces. Members of Botryobasidiaceae are microscopic and inconspicuous, yet ecologically significant as decomposers and contributors to nutrient cycling.
