Order Dimargaritales is a monotypic group of parasitic fungi within the class Dimargaritomycetes, part of the subdivision Kickxellomycotina in the phylum Zoopagomycota. Defined in 1979, this order comprises approximately 15 species that primarily parasitize other fungi, particularly within the Mucorales order. Dimargaritales are obligate mycoparasites, meaning they depend on other fungi for survival and reproduction. Despite their parasitic nature, they can also grow independently on agar media, indicating a facultative parasitic lifestyle under certain conditions. The order includes the family Dimargaritaceae, which contains three genera: Dimargaris (7 species), Dispira (4 species), and Tieghemiomyces (2 species). Additionally, the genus Spinalia is considered incertae sedis within this order, reflecting its uncertain taxonomic placement. Dimargaritales are of interest to mycologists due to their unique ecological role as fungal parasites and their potential applications in biological control and ecological studies.
