Habitat:
This is a terrestrial species associated with shaded, wet leaf-litter, in tropical moist forest. Larvae are found in inland wetlands and marshes, including old abandoned gem mining pits surrounded by tropical forest. This species is not thought to be tolerant to habitat disturbance as it requires canopy cover (Sri Lanka Red List Assessment Workshop February 2020).
Range:
This species was previously known only from two sites in southern Sri Lanka: Morningside in eastern Sinharaja, and Mahawalatenna in Balangoda. It has now also been recorded from Hadapan Ella Plains (P. Samarawickrama unpub. data February 2020) and Gongala (D. Gabadage unpub. data February 2020). The recorded elevation range is 515-1,110 m asl, the extent of occurrence (EOO) of its expanded distribution is 307 km2, and it is expected to occur in four threat-defined locations. This species is likely restricted to its known localities (Sri Lanka Red List Assessment Workshop February 2020).
Conservation:
Conservation Actions In-Place
This species has been recorded from the Sinharaja World Heritage Site as well as Morningside Forest Reserve (Sri Lanka Red List Assessment Workshop February 2020).
Conservation Needed
Continued and strengthened management of protected area(s) where this species occurs, and expanded protection of suitable habitat elsewhere in its range is needed.
Research Needed
There is a need for monitoring the population status of this species given the threats of encroaching agriculture and development, agro-chemical pollution, and the potential impacts of climate change.
