The Family Microhylidae consists of a diverse group of small to medium-sized frogs, commonly known as narrow-mouthed frogs, found in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. They are characterized by rounded bodies, short limbs, and narrow mouths, adaptations suited for feeding on small invertebrates like ants and termites. Many microhylids are terrestrial or fossorial, living in leaf litter or burrowing into the soil, while some are arboreal. Reproduction varies widely, with many species laying eggs in moist soil or water, and some exhibiting direct development, where eggs hatch into miniature frogs without a tadpole stage. Microhylidae play an important ecological role as insect predators and are often indicators of environmental health.
