Habitat:
This terrestrial, fossorial species is usually found in leaf-litter or in holes in the ground in tropical rainforest. Although generally found in primary forest, the species seems to prefer natural clearings and can also be found in muddy areas next to water springs. Males call exclusively during rain, from small burrows in the ground (Kok and Kalamandeen 2008). It is not adaptive to human modification of its habitats. Clutches of two embryos are laid 10 cm down in underground burrows. These terrestrial eggs are large and develop into non-feeding tadpoles, which complete their development within the burrow and do not require water.

Range:
This species is known only from several widely separated areas in the Amazon basin: the type locality in Vaupés Department, south-eastern Colombia (Pyburn 1975); Amazonas, Venezuela (Señaris et al. 2003, Barrio-Amorós et al. 2019); the vicinity of Manaus, Amazonas state, in central Brazil (Zimmerman and Rodrigues 1990, Lima et al. 2006, Menin et al. 2007); and Kaieteur National Park, Guyana (Kok and Kalamandeen 2008). All records have been from around 100 m asl.

Conservation:
Conservation Actions In-Place
It potentially occurs in the Serranía de la Neblina National Park in Venezuela, and is likely to be present in other protected areas.

Research Needed
Comparison of specimens from the different subpopulations with those from the type locality is required (Kok and Kalamandeen 2008).
