Habitat:
This species inhabits upstream regions surrounded by primary broad-leaved evergreen forest, where it breeds in streams. It preys mainly on crustaceans and earthworms.

Range:

This is the northernmost species of the genus, found only in the north of Okinawajima, in the Ryukyu Archipelago (Nansei-shoto) of Japan. Its elevational range is unknown. Its estimated extent of occurrence is 247 km2, and when considering the threat of invasive species it is considered to occur in only one location.


Conservation:
Conservation Actions In-Place
The species has been designated as Endangered in the Japanese Red List. It has been designated a natural monument by the Okinawa Prefecture and is totally protected. There has been a successful eradication programme for introduced mongoose by the Japanese government and Okinawa prefectural government that has benefited this species,

Conservation Needed
There remains a need for improved protection of the habitat of this species in northern Okinawajima. The species' ongoing recovery requires the continuation and success of efforts to completely eradicate mongoose.

Research Needed
Population monitoring is recommended for this restricted range species.
