Habitat:

This species inhabits ponds and rice fields, and is common in anthropogenically modified habitats (Grismer et al. 2007). It breeds in suitable streams. Breeding season occurs between April to August (Fei et al. 2012). Females spawn about 700 eggs at a time, and tadpoles lives in the same environment but are extremely difficult to find due to their benthic habit (Fei et al. 2012). Calling behaviour has been observed from adults on pond vegetation or the surface of water, and a description of its call is included in Fei et al. (2012).

Range:
This is a widespread species found in China (Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Hong Kong and Yunnan [Yang 2008]), much of Bangladesh, the lowland plains of mainland Myanmar, Thailand, Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), Cambodia and Viet Nam (Nguyen et al. 2005), (northern Peninsular) Malaysia, and Indonesia (Sumatra and Java) (Bourret 1942, Taylor 1962, Berry 1975, Inger and Colwell 1977, Iskandar 1998, Zug et al. 1998, Stuart 1999). Its presence is uncertain in Nepal. It occurs up to 750 m asl.

In the 2004 assessment it was also reported to occur in India (Sikkim and West Bengal), however, these are unconfirmed reports and it is not thought to occur in the country (India Red List Assessment Workshop February 2021). For the purposes of this assessment, these records have been removed.

Conservation:
Conservation Actions In-Place
Its range overlaps with several protected areas. This species occurs in Phnom Aural Wildlife Sanctuary in the eastern Cardomom Mountains in Cambodia (Grismer et al. 2007). It possibly occurs in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in Viet Nam, although this requires voucher specimen verification (Hendrix et al. 2008). This species is listed in the "List of Beneficial or of Important Economic or Scientific Value Terrestrial Wild Animals under States Protection", under the protection of the "Law of the People's Republic of China on the Protection of Wildlife" (D.Q. Rao and B. Cai pers. comm. 2018).

Research Needed
Surveys to determine the current distribution of this species and its population size, status and trends are recommended.
