Habitat:
This species inhabits large to medium streams and the surrounding forests. Adults hide on the cliffs or in the grass near to the streams or cascades (Fei et al. 2012). It can tolerate some habitat disturbance and it can be found near rice paddy fields and at the forest edge; however it needs forest nearby and streams (J. Yang, J. Wang and P.P. Li pers comm. June 2019). Breeding takes place in streams and occurs around September (Fei et al. 2012).

Range:
This species is endemic to southern and south-western Hainan, where it is known from Jiangfenglian, Diaoluoshan, Wuzhishan, Yinggeling and Wanning counties, China, between 50–1,000 m asl. It is likely to occur more widely. It occurs in 10 or fewer threat-defined locations, and its extent of occurrence (EOO) is 10,609 km2.

Conservation:

Conservation Actions In-Place
This species occurs in many protected areas including Yinggeling National Nature Reserve, Jiangfengling National Forest Park and Nature Reserve, Wuzhishan National Nature Reserve, and Diaoluoshan National Nature Reserve. It is protected on Hainan (J. Yang and J. Wang pers. comm. June 2019).

Conservation Needed
Further habitat protection and improved management is required in lowland areas on Hainan Island, and the development of sustainable farming techniques need to be carried out with local communities (J. Yang pers. comm. June 2019).

Research Needed
Research is required into its ecology, population and distribution.
