Habitat:
This species inhabits montane forests and weedy and shrubby areas with flourishing vegetation near streams and ponds in mountainous areas. It has also been recorded in secondary forest and arable land. Adults are terrestrial, while larvae develop in water. The water quality of reproductive waters is clear, pH 7, and the water depth of ponds is 5–30 cm. The breeding season lasts from November to December. Eggs are laid in pairs, and each pair contains 60–80 eggs (Fei et al. 2012).

Range:
This species is known only from the vicinity of the type locality near the city of Yichang in Hubei Province, China, but is expected to occur more widely. It has been recorded at elevations ranging from 1,400–1,500 m asl (Fei et al. 2012). The populations previously assigned to this species from Fujian Province, China are thought to belong to another species.

Conservation:
Conservation Actions In-Place
This species has been recorded from a small reserve for this species. This species is on the "List of Beneficial or of Important Economic or Scientific Value Terrestrial Wild Animals under States Protection", under the protection of the "Law of the People's Republic of China on the Protection of Wildlife", which provides a moderate degree of protection and makes it illegal to collect (China Red List Assessment Workshop June 2019).

Conservation Needed
Continued and strengthened management of protected area(s) where this species occurs, habitat restoration, and expanded protection of forest elsewhere in its range is needed. Legislation and enforcement of legislation are needed to address the issue of illegal trade. Additionally, it is recommended that public outreach and education programmes be created and implemented for this species.

Research Needed
More information is needed on this species' distribution, population status, ecology, and threats. Further taxonomic research is needed to determine the validity of this species. Additionally, there is a need for monitoring the population status of this species given the threats of expanding agriculture and urbanization.
