Habitat:
This species inhabits hill forests and breeds in stream pools, fallow rice paddies, and nearby still-water pools where the larvae also develop.
Range:
This species is known from northeast China (Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces), the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and the Republic of Korea, between 12–800 m asl. It was previously known from the islands of Geoje and Namhae (previously assigned to Hynobius quelpaertensis) however, following genetic analysis subpopulations from Geoje Island have been assigned to H. geojeensis and H. notialis, subpopulations from Namhae and Changseong Islands have been assigned to H. notialis, and subpopulations from extreme southern Republic of Korea have been assigned to H. notialis and H. perplicatus (Borzée and Min 2021). It may also occur in Russia, but there are currently no records of this species there.
