Range:
This species is known from the Dabieshan area (Hubei, Henan, and Anhui Provinces) in central China. It occurs at elevations ranging from 380–1,100 m asl. Subpopulations from Shancheng, Henan Province that were previously assigned to Hynobius yunanicus are now allocated to this species, as the two have been synonymized by Xiong et al. (2007). Its extent of occurrence (EOO) is 12,495 km2.

Conservation:
Conservation Actions In-Place
The range of this species' crosses several protected areas. This species is on the "List of Beneficial or of Important Economic or Scientific Value Terrestrial Wild Animals under States Protection", under the protection of the "Law of the People's Republic of China on the Protection of Wildlife", which provides a moderate degree of protection and makes it illegal to collect (China Red List Assessment Workshop June 2019).

Conservation Needed
Continued and strengthened management of protected area(s) where this species occurs, and expanded protection of suitable habitat elsewhere in its range is needed. Legislation and enforcement of legislation are needed to address the issue of illegal collection, and where legal there is a need to implement measures, such as a harvest management plan, to ensure that the offtake of this species from the wild is managed in a sustainable manner. Additionally, it is recommended that public outreach and awareness programs be implemented for this species.

Research Needed
More information is needed on this species' distribution, population status, ecology, harvesting trends, and threats. There is a need for monitoring the population status of this species given the threats of over-collection.
