Habitat:
It is an aquatic species, inhabiting permanent rivers and marshes, mainly in lowland forest. It is a viviparous species, giving birth in water.
Range:
This species is known from the Amazon Basin of Colombia, Venezuela (Puerto Ayacucho), and Peru, east to the eastern coast of Brazil (Acre, Amazonas, Amapá, Pará and Rondônia; Maciel and Hoogmoed 2011, Ramalho et al. 2016), and also in the rivers of the Guiana Shield region of Venezuela, Guyana and French Guiana. It ranges from 0–200 m asl. Following the synonymy with Typhlonectes cunhai, a subpopulation near Manaus in Amazonas State in Brazil has been assigned to this species (Wilkinson and Nussbaum 2006). This species has most likely dispersed from the Amazonian drainage to east French Guiana, where there is a range boundary; and has dispersed into Guyana from the Essequibo drainage and the Amazon drainage (A. Fouquet pers. comm. 2017). There are no records from Suriname which likely represents a genuine gap in its range (A. Fouquet pers. comm. 2017).
