Habitat:
This aquatic species inhabits rivers, marshes, and lakes, usually in open areas, and is only rarely found on land. It thrives in polluted water and is resilient to major water quality degradation. It is ovoviviparous, giving birth to young in the water.

Range:
This species is known from western and northern Colombia and northwestern Venezuela. In Colombia, it occurs in the Cauca and Magdalena river basins in the departments of Antioquia, Atlántico, Bolívar, Caldas, Córdoba, Cesar, Magdalena, Norte de Santander, Tolima, Santander, Sucre, and Valle del Cauca. In Venezuela, it has been recorded around the Maracaibo Lake Bain in Zulia state. It ranges up to 1,000 m asl. It is suggested to occur in the Orinoco River and Trinidad, although this requires confirmation.

Conservation:
It is present in several protected areas throughout its range (IUCN and UNEP-WCMC 2020).
