The Order Galliformes comprises heavy-bodied, ground-dwelling birds such as chickens, turkeys, pheasants, quails, and grouse. These birds are generally strong fliers only for short distances and are adapted for running and scratching in search of seeds, insects, and plant material. They have stout beaks, strong legs, and well-developed claws for digging and foraging. Most Galliformes are social or semi-social, often forming flocks, and exhibit polygamous or monogamous breeding behaviors, with many species showing elaborate courtship displays. Widely distributed across forests, grasslands, and agricultural areas, they are important both ecologically and economically as a source of food and game.
