Habitat:
Inhabits the interior of montane evergreen forest between 600 m and 2,200 m (Eaton et al. 2021).

Range:
Endemic to the eastern part of East Java, Indonesia, where it is known from only three areas (west to east): Dataran Tinggi Hyang (Yang Highlands), Meru Betiri and Mt Ijen.

Conservation:
Conservation Actions Underway
A small part of its range is protected, comprising: (1) Dataran Tinggi Yang [c.140 km2]; and (2) Kawah Ijen [c.25 km2] (Savini et al. 2021, UNEP-WCMC and IUCN 2023). However, the effectiveness of these designations (especially from trapping) is unknown. Captive populations are held, including one at Prigen Conservation Breeding Ark (PCBA), East Java.

Conservation Actions Proposed
Carry out surveys, particularly at Dataran Tinggi Yang, to determine the species density at this poorly known site. Expand the protected area network to better protect this species' habitat. Ensure it is effective at preventing trapping of this species. Further the work of Nijman (2022) to confirm the extent of trade, and determine its impact on wild populations. Continue to monitor forest cover loss using remote sensing data.
