Habitat:
It inhabits high altitude Andean lakes, with dense submerged aquatic plants, primarily at 3,000-5,200 m but as low as 2,000 m in harsh weather.
Range:
This species is known from a few high altitude Andean lakes in south-west Bolivia, north Chile, and north-west Argentina (Haene and Montañez 1996). It has more recently been recorded in southern Peru, however this is considered a vagrant record (Ugarte et al. 2014).
