Habitat:
The species' ecology is not well known, but occurs in primary and old secondary forest, agro-forest (J.S. Udin in litt. 2025), as well as abandoned, bushy, rice fields, in lowlands and hills (BirdLife International 2001, Indrawan et al. 2006, Taylor and Sharpe 2020). Recorded below 1,800 m (Eaton et al. 2021). One bird has also been recorded along a streambed and at a small stagnant pool (Wardill et al. 1998), and it has been recorded from sago swamp forest (J.S. Udin  in litt. 2025). In the Togian Islands, locals report the species occurs in mixed gardens (Indrawan et al. 2006). Diet not well known, but records indicate it feeds on snails, beetles, and other insects (BirdLife International 2001).

Range:
Known from Sulawesi and the nearby islands of Peleng, Buton, and the Togian Islands, Indonesia (Indrawan et al. 2006, Martin et al. 2015, eBird 2024). The species' distribution on Sulawesi is uncertain due to its cryptic nature, but records suggest it occurs from the far north, south to Rawa Aopa Watumohai National Park (Wardill et al. 1999, eBird 2024), but it likely occurs in suitable habitat throughout the island (T. Martin in litt. 2025).

Conservation:
Conservation Actions Underway
The species is known to occur in Bogani Nani Wartabone, Lore Lindu and Rawa Aopa Watumohai National Parks (Indrawan et al. 2006, Taylor and Sharpe 2020). Burung Indonesia is working on Peleng to reduce habitat loss and degradation by implementing awareness and education programs, and mainstreaming endemic biodiversity protection measures into local government policies and programmes (J. S. Udin in litt. 2025).

Conservation Actions Proposed
Conduct further surveys for this species (using tape playback of its vocalisations to aid detection) throughout all suitable habitat on Sulawesi, and nearby islands. Surveys/monitoring are required to determine its precise population size, and trends. Research is required to determine the species' response forest loss, and to identify the scope and severity of predation, hunting, and any other unidentified threats. Once known, ensure key habitat/populations are formally protected.
