The Order Procellariiformes comprises seabirds commonly known as albatrosses, petrels, shearwaters, and storm-petrels. These birds are highly adapted to life over open oceans, with long, narrow wings built for dynamic soaring and gliding over vast distances with minimal energy expenditure. They have specialized tubenose structures on their beaks that help excrete excess salt from seawater, allowing them to drink seawater safely. Procellariiformes are mostly colonial nesters, often returning to remote islands to breed, and feed primarily on fish, squid, and other marine organisms. Their strong navigation skills and long migrations make them important indicators of ocean health and ecosystem dynamics.
