The family Trogonidae, belonging to the order Trogoniformes, comprises the colorful and often iridescent birds commonly known as trogons and quetzals. These birds are found primarily in tropical forests of Central and South America, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Trogons are medium-sized, with compact bodies, broad bills, and distinctive long tails, often with striking patterns and bright plumage. They are primarily insectivorous and frugivorous, feeding on insects, small invertebrates, and fruits, and are known for their quiet, soft calls. Trogons typically nest in tree cavities or termite mounds and are highly territorial, contributing to the ecological balance of their forest habitats as seed dispersers and insect population regulators.
