The Family Pontoporiidae consists of the river dolphins, with the La Plata dolphin (Pontoporia blainvillei) as the most well-known species. These small, freshwater and coastal dolphins are found in estuaries and rivers of South America, particularly in the Río de la Plata and adjacent coastal areas. Pontoporiids have elongated snouts adapted for catching fish and small invertebrates, and their slender, streamlined bodies allow agile swimming in shallow waters. They are social animals, often seen in small groups, and are considered vulnerable due to threats from habitat degradation, bycatch in fishing nets, and pollution. This family represents an important part of South American aquatic ecosystems and highlights the diversity of riverine cetaceans.
