Habitat:

Aselliscus stoliczkanus is an insectivorous bat that occurs in subtropical and tropical moist lowland forests in limestone areas and is known to roost in clusters of several to thousands of individuals in caves (Robinson et al. 1995, Struebig et al. 2005, Tu et al. 2015). They roost with a distance of approximately 23 cm between them (Robinson et al. 1995). Surveys in Thailand, Laos and Vietnam indicate that March-June is the major reproductive period of this species. A study in China indicated that A. stoliczkanus mainly consumes lepidopterans, beetles, hemipterans and dragonflies, although its diet composition varies seasonally (Liu et al. 2019).

Range:

The species is widely distributed in China, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Viet Nam (Tu et al. 2015, Zhang et al. 2016). Its elevation range is from less than 20 masl. to nearly 2,100 masl.

Conservation:

There are no species-specific conservation measures in place for the species. It occurs in a number of protected areas in Thailand, Lao PDR and Viet Nam. Protection of major cave roosts is warranted. Further, research on the species’ ecology, population status and trends is needed. Morphological and genetic studies are required to clarify the taxonomic status of A. trifida and A. wheeleri and recently recognized phylogenetically separated geographical races in China and Indochina (V.T. Tu pers. comm.).
