Habitat:
This species occurs in savanna, bushveld and coastal forest, and is usually associated with rivers and other water resources (Taylor 2000), provided there are caves or buildings where it can roost during the day (Happold 1987). Colony size varies from small to medium-sized groups of tens or hundreds of individuals (Taylor 2000), exceptionally up to 500,000 (Brosset 1966; Happold 1987).

Range:
The exact range of this species is not currently known. Hipposideros caffer sensu lato occurs across most of sub-Saharan Africa except for central forested regions as well as in parts of Arabia (Simmons 2005). However, H. caffer s.s. is only known from southern African countries of Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa, Eswatini, Zimbabwe. Populations in Malawi, Zambia, and southern Tanzania may refer to this species, while the taxonomic status of East African records is currently unresolved. Elevation ranges from sea level to 2,500 m in this area.

Conservation:
No specific conservation measures in place. Occurs in protected areas throughout its range.
