Habitat:
Roosts in caves, and forages mostly within forest, including primary, secondary and swamp forest. Its echolocation call has a characteristic frequency of c. 96 kHz on the island of Halmahera (K.N. Armstrong and S. Hamilton unpublished data).
Range:
It occurs in the North Maluku and West Papua provinces of Indonesia, including on the islands of Halmahera, Bacan, and Gebe in North Maluku Province, and in West Papua Province it occurs in the Schouten Islands (Biak, Supiori, and Numfoor), Waigeo Island (Wiantoro 2011) and parts of the Vogelkop Peninsula (Teluk Wondama and Teluk Bintuni Regencies) (Flannery 1995, Sinery et al. 2020).
Conservation:
Key conservation actions for this species are the protection of known roosting sites in caves, and the identification and protection of additional important roosting sites. Broadscale protection of forests will also help maintain population size in this species. Additional surveys will help to determine if the species has a wider range on the island of New Guinea. Research into the species population size and trend is warranted.
