Habitat:
Cabassous unicinctus inhabits tropical lowland and submontane forests in the Amazon and the Orinoco region, as well as in the ecotone between forested areas and grasslands in the seasonally flooded Llanos (Aya-Cuero et al. 2019, Feijó and Anacleto 2021). 


Range:
This South American species is found east of the Andes from northern Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, through to Venezuela, Guyana, French Guiana and Suriname in the north, to the state of Mato Grosso do Sul (Brazil) and Bolivia in the south (Feijó and Anacleto 2021). It occurs at altitudes up to 1,200 m asl.

Conservation:
The species is present in protected areas. An education and awareness program is being carried out by Fundación Omacha in the llanos of Colombia (Superina et al. 2019).
