Habitat:
The species occurs in scrub jungle, dry and moist deciduous forests, and montane sholas (wet evergreen forests) (Chakraborty 2005).

Range:
It is endemic to peninsular India. The species is present in eastern, central, and southern parts of peninsular India (Juman et al. 2024).

Conservation:
It is found in numerous protected areas in India: Eturnagaram WS, Gundlabrahmeshwaram Metta WS, Kawal WS, Nagarjunasagar Srisailam TR, Bori WS and NP, Pench NP, Pench (Priyadarshini) NP, Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, Chandaka Dampara WS, Satkosia Gorge WS (Molur et al. 2005), Kanha Tiger Reserve (Ghose and Bhattacharya, 1995), Biligiri Rangaswamy Temple Wildlife Sanctuary (Srinivasan et al. 2009), Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary (Giridhar and Srinivasulu, 2011), Yaval Wildlife Sanctuary (Shrivastava et al. 2013), Guru Ghasidas National Park, Bandhavgad Tiger Reserve, Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve, Melghat Tiger Reserve, Navegaon National Park (Tiple and Talmale, 2013), Tamhini Wildlife Sanctuary (Thatte and Joglekar, 2017), Nauradehi Wildlife Sanctuary (Talmale 2022), Panna Tiger Reserve (S. Talmale pers. comm. 2024).

It is listed in CITES Appendix II, and Schedule II of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 (amended 2022).
