Habitat:
This is a nocturnal terrestrial species and inhabits areas of sparse vegetation including grassland, semi-fixed sand dunes and sandy desert. In China this species is most abundant in sandy areas, including large sand dunes (T. Papenfuss pers. comm. 2016); in the Taklamakan one four-person field team recorded 100 individuals in two hours of nocturnal searches (T. Papenfuss pers. comm. 2016). It feeds on other lizards (J.H. Bi pers. comm. 2018). Animals are known to shelter in burrows during the day.

Range:
This species is known from the south of Mongolia (Anajeva et al. 1997) and the Chinese provinces of Xinjiang, Nei Mongol and Gansu. It occurs in the low elevation regions of the Gobi Desert and in the Taklamakan, Hami Depression (Macey et al. 1999). This species is found up to 2,000 m above sea level; in Mongolia its lowest recorded elevation is around 600 m (Terbish et al. 2006), and in China 500 m asl. (Zhao et al. 1999; L. Shi, J.H. Bi and B. Cai, pers. comm. 2018). In China this species is distributed in the Dzungaria Basin and Tarim Basin, in Xinjiang, northern Gansu (Dunhuang), and the Gobi desert in the west of Inner Mongolia (desert areas west of Linhe City) (Zhao et al. 1999; L. Shi, J.H. Bi and B. Cai, pers. comm. 2018).

Conservation:
There are no known species-specific conservation measures in place for this species, but it is known to occur within the Great Gobi Strictly Protected Area and Lesser Gobi Strictly Protected Area as well as several protected areas in China. No further conservation measures are needed. It is listed in the "List of Beneficial or of Important Economic or Scientific Value Terrestrial Wild Animals under States Protection", under the protection of the "Law of the People's Republic of China on the Protection of Wildlife". It is also a priority protected species in Inner Mongolia (J.H. Bi, L. Shi, and B. Cai pers. comm. 2018).
