The Family Ziphiidae comprises the beaked whales, a group of medium to large marine mammals known for their elongated beaks and deep-diving abilities. They are mostly solitary or found in small groups and inhabit oceans worldwide, often preferring deep offshore waters. Beaked whales feed primarily on squid and deep-sea fish, using echolocation to navigate and hunt at great depths. They are among the deepest-diving mammals, some reaching over 2,000 meters, and exhibit unique social behaviors, including vocal communication and coordinated foraging. Many species are elusive and rarely seen at the surface, making them one of the least-studied groups of cetaceans.
